Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
