Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
