Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
